How Much Does a Car Service Cost in Australia? (2026 Mechanic Prices)

16 September 2026

A standard car service in Australia costs $180 to $350 at an independent mechanic. A logbook service is $250 to $600. Brakes, batteries and tyres are the other big regular costs, and the numbers below will help you spot a fair quote.

Prices are typical 2026 ranges for common Japanese, Korean and Australian-market cars at independent workshops. Dealer servicing is usually 20 to 50 per cent more. European cars are more again.

Car service prices

Basic service: $180 - $350

Engine oil and filter, fluid top-ups, a visual inspection of brakes, tyres, belts and lights. Sometimes called a “minor” or “interim” service.

Logbook service: $250 - $600

Follows the manufacturer’s schedule for that kilometre interval. Small intervals (10,000 km) are at the lower end. Major intervals (40,000, 60,000, 100,000 km) add items like spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid, cabin and air filters, and can reach $600 to $1,200.

A logbook service at an independent workshop keeps your new-car warranty intact. That is the law in Australia, whatever the dealer suggests.

Major service: $400 - $1,200

Everything in a logbook service plus the big-ticket items due at that interval. If a timing belt is due (some cars at 100,000 km), add $800 to $1,500.

Roadworthy / safety inspection

  • NSW pink slip (eSafety check): $50 - $100
  • VIC roadworthy certificate: $150 - $250
  • QLD safety certificate: $80 - $150
  • WA, SA, TAS, ACT, NT: inspections vary; mostly required on transfer or for defective vehicles

Repairs needed to pass are always separate. A quote for the inspection is not a quote for the fix.

What makes a service cost more

  • The car. European brands need specific oils, more expensive filters and often more labour time.
  • The interval. A 100,000 km service is not a 10,000 km service. Check the logbook to see what is due before you get the quote.
  • Extras discovered on the hoist. Worn wiper blades, a cracked belt, a leaking gasket. A good mechanic calls you before doing anything not in the quote. Ask them to.
  • Parts quality. Genuine, OEM-equivalent and aftermarket parts can vary two-fold in price. OEM-equivalent is fine for most things.

How to get a fair mechanic quote

  1. Know your kilometres and what’s due. The logbook lists it.
  2. Ask for an itemised quote - labour, parts, and any “while we’re in there” items separated.
  3. Get a second price for anything over $500. Describe the job once and let local mechanics quote instead of driving between workshops.
  4. Ask about warranty on the work. 12 months or 20,000 km on parts and labour is standard.
  5. Mobile mechanics are worth considering for services and brakes. No workshop overheads and no call-out fee usually mean a lower price.

Red flags

  • A quote with no breakdown between parts and labour.
  • “Your car needs” a long list of extras on a routine service, with no explanation or photo.
  • Pressure to approve work on the phone right now.
  • No written quote before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a basic car service in Australia?
A basic service (oil, filter, inspection) typically costs $180 to $350 at an independent mechanic. A logbook service that follows the manufacturer's schedule is $250 to $600 depending on the interval and the car.
Does servicing at an independent mechanic void my new-car warranty?
No. In Australia you can service your car anywhere as long as the mechanic is qualified, uses parts that meet the manufacturer's specification and follows the logbook schedule. Dealers cannot require you to service with them to keep the warranty.
How much do brake pads cost to replace?
Front brake pads are typically $250 to $500 fitted. Pads and rotors together are $500 to $900 per axle. European and performance cars sit above these ranges.
What does a roadworthy certificate cost?
It varies by state - roughly $50 to $100 for a NSW pink slip, $150 to $250 for a Victorian RWC, and $80 to $150 for a Queensland safety certificate. Any repairs needed to pass are extra.
